#Gitea is joining the fediverse 🎉 We can now announce we've been accepted into the #NLnet funding round that we applied to. nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/

Thank you to @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends and so many others for getting us to this point.

We are very much looking forward to many wonderful things that federation within forges can support.

@gitea @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends isn't this just reinventing the wheel when we have git send email?

@werwolf @f @gitea @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends Yes. Mailing lists are a pretty bad workflow for software production. You can easily waste a day getting your patch series in order.

@werwolf @gitea @forgefriends

True. Linux and other projects that have a mail workflow. But there are contexts where developers chose a differently, such as using a forge.

Whatever the reasons, this is where we are now. There are two paths forward: a) convince people using forges to switch to a mail based workflow, b) federate forges. The first is what SourceHut and others do. Gitea chose the second option and implement federation.

It’s not a competition, there is value in both approaches.

@dachary @gitea @forgefriends yeah, I agree. Gitea is still far better than Github or Gitlab. But I hate being forced to use the web UI to do things.

For anyone who prefers mail-based workflows there's sourcehut or just running cgit and a mailing list.

ForgeFed is about integrating web-based forges like gitea and gitlab, which for many people is the preferred interaction model.
It might be nice if someone would add a sourcehut-like email workflow to gitea and gitlab. That would be a different project than ForgeFed.
